You can now play Epic Games' battle royale shooter on both iOS or Android devices, taking the most-played game worldwide to a wide range of pocket-sized smartphones and bag-ready tablets.

Bringing Fortnite to mobile was a no brainer. The runaway success of Fortnite Battle Royale, which sees 100 players duke it out on an island map to be the last fighter standing, has already seen it come to Xbox One, Playstation 4, and Nintendo Switch.

Thankfully, Fortnite's cartoonish art style also lets it downscale easily to smartphone screens, which have never been more capable of competitive online gaming – with an aim-assist option for Fortnite mobile players mourning the loss of detail at that smaller size.

So Fortnite mobile is very much the real thing, and if you're reading this it's because you want to jump right in to the Epic Games mobile game. To that end, we've put together a step-by-step guide for starting your Fortnite mobile game adventure.

What is Fortnite on mobile?

Fortnite mobile is the full game you know and love from PCs and consoles, with the same weapons, the same map and an identical update schedule.

The controls are adapted for touchscreen, with some actions automated to make it less fiddly, including picking up items and opening doors.

Elements of Fortnite's UI are different on Android too, with extra building buttons popping up, and there are both on-screen footstep and gunshot indicators to tell you the direction of any nearby sounds. Other than that, Fortnite on mobile is the same game.

How to download Fortnite mobile on iOS

If you're an iOS user reading this, all you have to do is head to the App Store as usual and search for Fortnite in the search bar. You then hit install and wait for the game's icon to pop up on your homescreen or list of apps. Easy, right?

How to install Fortnite mobile on Android

First thing's first: you won't find it on the Google Play Store like all your other apps.

While iOS users have been happily downloading Fortnite from Apple's App Store, anyone on Android will have to find a dedicated install file on the Fortnite website.

This is partially to 'build a direct relationship with players' but may have more to do with not giving Google a 30% cut on Fortnite app purchases.

All players have to do is open an internet browser on their smartphone – whether that's Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, or Internet Explorer – and go to Fortnite.com/Android, where they'll find the Fortnite Installer for download.

The install file APK will only take up about 2mb of storage, though the game itself comes in at a more sizeable 2GB.

Why would Epic Games keep the Android version off the Play Store?

It’s certainly a bold decision—the Play Store is where Android users get the vast majority of their apps, and so by not being there, Epic potentially loses some players. But Fortnite is a huge household name, and perhaps the developer is hoping players won’t mind taking a few extra steps to get it on their phone.

Besides, by forcing players to download the game through its website, Epic doesn’t have to share any of the money it makes from in-app purchases with Google. If Fortnite was on the Play Store, Google would take a 30% slice, as Apple does with the iOS version.

An official press release cited Epic's desire to build a 'direct relationship' with its players – while acknowledging the 'economic efficiency' of circumventing Google's store tax entirely.

Considering that Fortnite on iOS has passed 100 million downloads and cleared $160 million from in-app purchases, swerving the Play Store may prove to be a smart business decision.

This was only the start, however: Epic has since launched its own Epic Games Store to offer Fortnite and more besides through its own digital marketplace.

Does Fortnite mobile support cross-play?

Yes – Fortnite on Android and iOS is compatible with iOS, PC, PS4 and Xbox One versions of the shooter, so you’ll be able to squad up with your friends on other platforms. Cross-play is currently available between all consoles listed above, after mounting pressure from fans convinced Sony to change its tune.

  • Epic Games Store: how it could take on Steam

Epic's hit battle royale game, Fortnite, made its long-awaited debut on Android earlier this summer, but up until now, it has only been available to users who received an invite for the beta. That has changed, and now all Android owners can download the Fortnite beta even without an invitation, provided they have a compatible device. Here's how you can jump in.

Unlike most other games available on Android, Fortnite can't be downloaded through the Google Play store. Epic had previously announced that it is bypassing Google's app store and offering the game to fans directly through its own website. If you want to download Fortnite on Android, all you'll need to do is go here on your phone and scan the QR code when prompted.

As previously noted, Fortnite won't be compatible with all Android devices. You'll need to have a 'recent high-end Android smartphone' in order to run the game. Fortunately, there's a fairly long list of supported devices outlined here and on Epic's FAQ page, and even if you don't have one of the phones listed there, you may still be able to run the game if your device meets the following recommended minimum specs:

Fortnite Download On Android Tablet

  • OS: Recommended Android 8.0 or higher, 64 bit
  • RAM: 3GB or higher (Recommended 4 GB)
  • GPU: Adreno 530 or higher, Mali-G71 MP20, Mali-G72 MP12 or higher

Part of the reason Epic is skipping Google Play with Fortnite's release is to bypass the 30% 'store tax' applied to all purchases. The developer also says this move allows it to 'bring its games directly to customers,' but it isn't without some drawbacks. Namely, it leaves the game susceptible to security risks, while some Android apps that promise free V-Bucks and other cheats are actually phishing schemes.
